I like to draw directly from life, trying to capture the moment, the vitality of the subject
Born in Newbury, Berkshire in 1964, Richard has had a passion for drawing and painting wildlife from an early age. A degree in Graphic Design/Illustration from Kingston Polytechnic set him on a commercial illustration path, but after winning the British Birds magazine, Bird Illustrator of the Year award in 1993 painting wildlife became increasingly important.
Richard's worldwide travels, in particularly Asia, filled many sketchbooks with drawings of the birds and animals encountered. He fondly remembers hearing Rhinoceros Hornbills in Malaysia, calling high in the canopy above, and just trying to get a glimpse, let alone a sketch. But despite these adventures, one of his happiest places is on the marshes and estuary near his home in Essex. The ever changing patterns of water, tide and weather, combined with the variety of birdlife that haunt the Colne estuary creates a never ending source of inspiration. There is much to keep his pencils and watercolours busy for many years to come.
