Art is to be felt - not understood
MIA was born in the north of Argentina, amid a landscape of red earth, grandiose rivers, lush vegetation, dramatic storms and searing sun. After graduating in Fine Art, she won a scholarship to study painting at the Accademia delle belle Arte in Venice under Fabrizio Plessi, where she was 'discovered' by the noted critic, the late Pierre Restany, who was attracted by the energy and spontaneity of her work. MIA moved from Italy to London in 1993 and has exhibited widely in Europe and Latin America. Commissions include murals in Taiwan and Austria and her paintings are held in collections in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
MIA's work embraces the colours and vitality of Argentina, but her mother was a concert standard pianist, so her other great inspiration is music. In 2010 MIA became the first visual artist in residence at Steinway & Sons in London and spent almost a year painting a newly renovated Model D concert grand piano. A unique opportunity to integrate music and colour, it was the first time a concert-grade piano has been turned into an abstract work of art. As an other-worldly croc, Macrosmile has a keyboard on his back and shares MIA's fascination with the beguiling alliance of music and colour.
MIA is currently preparing a solo exhibition in Spain this Autumn and a show in Hongkong next year.
