I drew because without drawing I had no identity
Jo Fraser is an award-winning, exhibiting portrait and figurative artist who currently lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. Jo was born and educated in Edinburgh and studied Fine Art at Scotland's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, in which she graduated with first class honours in 2008.
Jo is recognized for her blend of strong draughtsmanship, loose paintwork and atmospheric tension that result in an academic but gritty, contemporary take on the ethos of traditional portraiture. For the last few years, Jo has worked extensively and exclusively on large commissioned portraits for private collections and stately homes, charged with the same grit, and an edge of emotional energy and altering perceptions of reality for which her work has come to be identified.
Jo is a 2011 BP Award Exhibitor and won the BP Travel Award in June for her proposal to travel to the region of Patacancha in Peru where she will observe the labour-intensive production of textiles in small, indigenous communities and produce a series of works to be exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in 2012.
